Understanding the Tesla Powerwall 3

Powerwall stores your solar energy for backup protection, so when the grid goes down, your power stays on. Powerwall home battery continues Tesla’s mission and makes clean energy accessible to all, day and night.

For most homes, customers can receive whole-home backup to power their entire home during an outage and become energy independent by producing energy with solar. Customers can also reduce their reliance on the grid and save money on utility bills. Once installed, Powerwall can be monitored and managed using the Tesla app to customize system behavior to meet energy goals.

Powerwall 3 is a fully integrated solar and battery system, designed to meet the needs of your home. Powerwall 3 can supply more power with a single unit and is designed for easy expansion to meet your present or future needs. Powerwall 3 features an integrated solar inverter allowing solar to be connected directly for high efficiency; it can also be added to existing solar or installed on its own, like Powerwall 2.

Powerwall 3 is now available from Got Watts, a Testa Energy Certified Installer.

Models of Powerwalls

Powerwall is a rechargeable home battery system that can be installed with solar.

Powerwall 3 and Powerwall+ are designed for owners installing a new solar and storage system. Solar systems are integrated directly into the Powerwall for higher efficiency and a more compact installation, with solar inverters included. Powerwall 2 is designed to be added to existing solar systems and is compatible with all major inverter brands.

Powerwall with Solar

When the sun rises, solar energy begins powering the home. The home can pull it from the utility grid when additional power is required.

Powerwall is charged by solar during the day, when solar panels are producing more electricity than the home is consuming. Powerwall then stores that energy until the home needs it, such as when solar is no longer producing at night, or when the utility grid is offline during a power outage. With Tesla, when your Powerwall system changes status, such as the utility grid going down or offline, you can expect to receive notifications from the Tesla app.

When the sun comes out the next day, solar recharges Powerwall, giving you a cycle of clean, renewable energy.

Powerwall without Solar

If your electricity rates vary throughout the day, like most PG&E customers, Powerwall can charge when your PG&E electricity costs are low and discharge when electricity costs are high, generating automatic savings. Powerwall will also provide seamless backup power by detecting grid outages and automatically becoming the home's main power source.

Powerwall without Backup

When Powerwall+ is installed by itself with a non-backup configuration, it entirely operates when the grid is active but does not provide power when there is a grid outage. Owners can use the power they generate with solar at night, export energy at peak prices and participate in Virtual Power Plant programs.

Note: Non-backup configuration is not currently supported for Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3.

Powerwall 3 FAQs

Can I add Powerwall 3 to Powerwall 2?

No. Powerwall 3 can be added to other Powerwall 3 batteries but not to Powerwall 2 or Powerwall+ batteries.

Can I add Powerwall 3 to an existing solar system?

Yes. Powerwall 3 is compatible with all major solar inverter brands and supports various system sizes.

What is the warranty on a Powerwal 3?

Powerwall 3 is covered by a 10-year warranty, like Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+.

I live in California. Will switching my home battery to a Powerwall 3 cause me to lose NEM 2.0 status?

Yes. Californian utilities administering NEM 2.0 have indicated that any change to the currently approved system design after April 14, 2023, would invalidate interconnection applications. If you are changing to Powerwall 3, you must enroll in the new Net Billing Tariff.
